Aidan Byrne is a visual artist and art facilitator based at Belmont Mill Artist Studios in Co Offaly. Aidan studied sculpture at GMIT and graduated with BA (hons) Fine Art degree in 2011.
In 2016 Aidan opened his mosaic workshop at Belmont Mill and began teaching weekly mosaic classes and one day workshops. This developed to various locations around the Midlands and beyond. The workshops have gone from strength to strength as have the skill levels of the students and the quality of mosaics being created.
One Day Workshop description
The one day mosaic workshops are designed to suit complete beginners and people with previous experience in mosaic and other crafts.
Over the course of the day participants will go through all the processes involved in making a mosaic from start to finish. Each participant makes their own personalised mosaic and brings it home at the end of the workshop.
Making mosaics is very therapeutic. The engagement required to cut the shapes and piecing the puzzle together is a very intuitive, fun and fulfilling process. Be warned though it is highly addictive.
Aidan’s workshops are very professionally run whilst being light-hearted, the atmosphere is friendly and easy-going. People have travelled from up to 3 hours away to attend workshops and left delighted with their mosaic and the experience.
Participants will learn about:
Design planning. Tesserae – cutting and shaping tiles. Andamento – Arranging tiles to create a pattern or image. Substrates – Summary of materials used as backing for mosaics. Adhesives – Gluing of tesserae. Grouting – Filling the gaps between tiles with cement based grout in a range of colours.
The project options include: freestyle wall hanging panels, pot-stands, mirrors, Christmas decorations and more.
With the skills and information learned at the workshop it will be possible to attempt further mosaics at home.
When working with mosaic tesserae there are a wealth of materials and surfaces used for mosaic. Aidan stocks a wide range of high quality tesserae, predominantly from the Emaux de Briare ranges. The Briare collections are high-end French mosaic tiles with a composition of porcelain and crystal. Briare has a wide palette of tones and shades and easily adapts to other types of tesserae to create unique blends of colour and styles.
Time: 9:30am – 4:30pm. Cost: €95 (includes all materials and equipment). Deposit of €30 required to reserve a space. Call or text Aidan: 087 137 5415 Email: firstname.lastname@example.org Facebook: Mosaics at the Mill
